It is possible to smelt high purity metal bars by smelting a lot of low purity ore (not quite enough to produce a bar), and adding high quality ore at the point that will become a bar. This also rings true for using lime.

Just to clarify, if you smelt a full load of crap ore, and then a full load of good ore you get a bar of metal with the purity of the good ore. That is a much better way of putting it now I have had something to eat.
